New Fone & Vape shop in Teddington’s High Street is expected to open tomorrow

The controversial Fone & Vape shop which replaces Cavan Bakery in Teddington’s High Street is expected to open tomorrow, we have learned.

Despite the name of the shop, the new owners claim ‘Fone & Vape’ is merely a trade name and that the principle business will be technical repairs for mobile phones and laptops rather than vapes.

A sign filling the door windown today is headed Gadget Repairs and the well-lit interior appears to be full of technical accessories rather than vapes, which has concerned local residents as the shop is next to Awesome Dance school attending by young children.

The premises were occupied by Cavan Bakery until its closure in mid-April

The shop has attracted criticism from The Teddington Society and triggered an investigation by Richmond Council, which has met with the owners to discuss any possible breach of planning laws.

Company records show Fone & Vape has its head office in Sutton as well as another shop and others in Kilburn, Wembley and Hemel Hempstead.

In a statement The Teddington Society said: “There are two strands to this – one is stopping the visual deterioration of the High Street and our conservation areas by the conversion of the front of the shops using cheap and garish materials. The other is the limiting of shops such as ‘phone and vape’ type shops as there are already 3 in Broad Street.

“The Society has already put in an application to Richmond Council’s planning enforcement about the fascia and have had an acknowlegement that they will investigate. The main reasons are the unacceptablility of the material and lighting of the new fascia in a conservation area, the proximity to a Grade II listed building and the non complaince with the Council’s Shopfronts Supplementary Planning Guidance.

“The other issue is a new phone and vape shop on the High Street – our prime conservation area. It’s all part of the general deterioration of the High Street in particular and our retail streets in general. We have already had messages from members about the proximity of a vape shop to Awesome Studios, which a lot of children use.

“The managing agent, Snellers, have confirmed to Teddington Town that prior to marketing the property, their recommendations to their client were to agree terms for Cavan Bakery to renew their lease but the owners went ahead with re-letting the lease.

“The new Tobacco and Vapes Bill will give councils the ability to licence and approve/reject locations for vape shops, but that is not enacted yet.”
