Teddington community centre wins design award

The Teddington community centre has won a Design Award from the Teddington Society, recognising its exceptional contribution to the town’s architectural character. The new Elleray Centre in North Lane opened in February, replacing the much-loved but ageing Elleray Hall with a purpose-built, energy-efficient facility that offers full accessibility and flexible spaces for local activities, services and events.

The occasional award celebrates the best new or refurbished contribution to the area.

A modern home for community life

The new centre marks a significant upgrade from its predecessor.

The Elleray Centre provides an energy-efficient, fully accessible building with flexible spaces designed to accommodate a wide range of community activities. Where the old hall served the town well for decades, the new facility combines heritage continuity with modern standards, ensuring that local groups, services and events have a sustainable home for years to come. The Design Award from the Teddington Society highlights how thoughtful architecture can enhance a neighbourhood while serving practical needs.

A building that earns local recognition before its first birthday suggests the design got something important right.

What the award recognises

The Teddington Society awards are not given lightly.

The organisation periodically recognises buildings that make an outstanding contribution to the town’s character, considering both aesthetic quality and community benefit. The new Elleray Centre earned praise for achieving a balance that is often elusive in purpose-built community facilities: a contemporary design that fits comfortably within Teddington’s established streetscape while meeting the functional demands of a busy community hub.

Recognition from a local civic society carries weight because it reflects the judgement of residents who know the area intimately.
